How DOTS works

DOTS turns your total into a bodyweight-indexed score. Heavier lifters can move more weight partly because they carry more muscle, so comparing raw totals across weight classes isn't fair. DOTS corrects for that: it takes a sex-specific coefficient that depends on your bodyweight and divides your total by it, then multiplies by 500 to land on a readable scale.

The coefficient comes from a fourth-order polynomial fitted to competition data — a smooth curve that rises with bodyweight up to a point, capturing how much total a lifter of a given size is “expected” to lift. Divide your actual total by that expectation and you get a number that's high when you punch above your weight and lower when you don't, regardless of which weight class you're in. The 500 is just a normalization constant that keeps a strong human total in the few-hundred range.

Because the curve is only fitted over a realistic bodyweight range (roughly 40 to 210 kg for men and 40 to 150 kg for women), scores for bodyweights outside that range are computed at the nearest edge of the range rather than extrapolated — the same thing the official reference implementations do. The calculator tells you when that happens.

What's a good DOTS score?

DOTS has no official rank ladder, so treat these as loose orientation — approximate territory, not classifications. Where a given number actually places depends on the federation, the era, and whether the pool is drug-tested.

DOTS vs Wilks vs IPF GL

For decades, Wilks was the standard way to compare lifters across weight classes. It works the same way DOTS does — a bodyweight coefficient applied to your total — but its curve was criticized for disadvantaging certain bodyweights, particularly at the light and heavy extremes, and for men's and women's tables that some felt weren't balanced against each other.

DOTS, published in 2019 by Tim Konertz, re-fitted the coefficients against more recent competition data to smooth out those issues. It keeps one clean feature: separate coefficients for men and women, both scaled to the same 500-point normalization, with no equipment adjustment — a raw total and an equipped total go through the same formula. Many federations and OpenPowerlifting adopted it as their default.

The IPF GL points system is the International Powerlifting Federation's own formula, which replaced its earlier IPF points. It's a different equation with a different shape, so an IPF GL number and a DOTS number for the same lifter won't match — they're answering the same question with different math. For most lifters, DOTS and Wilks land close together; the choice between systems is mostly about which one your federation or comparison uses.

Common mistakes with DOTS

  • Entering pounds as kilos (or vice versa). DOTS is defined in kilograms, and a total entered in the wrong unit is off by more than double. Use the unit toggle and enter your numbers in whichever unit you actually lift in — the tool converts for you.
  • Comparing a single-lift DOTS to a total DOTS. A DOTS score is meant for your full three-lift total. Running one lift through the formula gives a number that isn't comparable to anyone's full-total DOTS.
  • Treating it as an official ranking. DOTS has no fixed rank ladder — the territory labels here are a rough guide, not a certification. Where a score places depends on the federation, era, and drug-testing status.
  • Mismatching bodyweight and total. The score only means something when your bodyweight and total come from the same period. Don't pair a goal bodyweight with an old total, or a meet total with your current, different bodyweight.
  • Ignoring equipment and age. DOTS adjusts for bodyweight and sex only. An equipped total scores higher than a raw one for the same lifter, and DOTS makes no age correction — factor those in when you compare.

Methodology

The score is DOTS = total (kg) × 500 ÷ P(bodyweight), where P is a fourth-order polynomial A·x⁴ + B·x³ + C·x² + D·x + E with separate coefficient sets for men and women. The coefficients are the published DOTS values (Tim Konertz, 2019), the same set used by OpenPowerlifting's reference implementation. Totals and bodyweights entered in pounds are converted to kilograms with the exact factor before scoring, so lb and kg give the same result.

The polynomial is only fitted over a realistic bodyweight range — roughly 40 to 210 kg for men and 40 to 150 kg for women. For a bodyweight outside that range, the calculator evaluates the coefficient at the nearest edge of the range rather than extrapolating the curve into territory it was never fitted for, and it flags when it does. This mirrors the behavior of the official implementations.

What is a DOTS score?

DOTS is a bodyweight-adjusted strength score for powerlifting. It takes your total (squat + bench + deadlift), divides by a number from a sex-specific formula based on your bodyweight, and scales it by 500. The result puts lifters of different bodyweights on one scale — a lighter lifter with a smaller total and a heavier lifter with a bigger total can score the same, meaning they're similarly strong for their size.

Is a 300 DOTS score good?

A 300 DOTS is a solid, well-trained total — past the beginner stage and into strong-amateur territory. Rough orientation: under 200 is early days, 200–300 novice-to-intermediate, 300–400 strong amateur, 400–450 around national-level territory, 450–500 elite range, 500+ world-class. These are approximate guides, not official classifications — DOTS has no fixed rank ladder, and where a number lands shifts by federation, era, and whether the pool is tested.

What's the difference between DOTS and Wilks?

Both adjust a total for bodyweight so lifters across weight classes can be compared. Wilks was the long-standing standard, but its coefficients were felt to disadvantage some bodyweights at the extremes. DOTS, published in 2019, re-fit the coefficients on more recent data and is now widely reported (OpenPowerlifting uses it). For most lifters the two give broadly similar numbers — DOTS is just the more current formula.

Should I use my total or a single lift?

DOTS is built for your full three-lift total — squat + bench + deadlift, the way a meet is scored. That's what the coefficients were fitted against. You can push a single lift through the formula, but the number isn't comparable to a full-total DOTS and isn't what people mean by “a DOTS score.” Know only two lifts? Enter those and treat the score as a floor — it rises once you add the third.

Do equipment and age affect DOTS?

DOTS adjusts only for bodyweight and sex — not age, and not equipment like wraps, suits, or bench shirts. A raw and an equipped total run through the same formula, so equipped lifters score higher for the same raw strength. Age comparisons are handled separately by age-coefficient tables applied on top. This tool gives the plain bodyweight-and-sex DOTS — keep age and equipment in mind when comparing.

Why doesn't this match my federation's number?

A few reasons. Your federation may report a different metric — the IPF uses its own GL points, not DOTS. Rounding differs too: meets round bodyweight and attempts to fixed increments and may round the score, while this tool uses your exact inputs. And some results split tested from untested pools, which changes ranking (not the DOTS number). Enter your exact meet bodyweight and total and small gaps from an official sheet usually come down to rounding or a different formula.

What bodyweight should I enter?

Use the bodyweight you weighed at when you hit the total — for a meet, your weigh-in weight. DOTS is sensitive to bodyweight, so being off by a few kilos shifts the score. Checking training numbers instead? Use your current bodyweight with a recent total from the same period. Don't mix a goal bodyweight with a total from a different phase — the score only means something when the two belong together.

Can women compare their DOTS against men?

DOTS uses separate men's and women's coefficients, because the strength-to-bodyweight relationship differs. Each is calibrated within its own population — a 400 DOTS is elite-leaning for either. Both scale to the same 500-point normalization, so the numbers sit on a comparable scale and are often placed side by side (mixed “best lifter” awards use exactly this). A reasonable cross-sex comparison of relative strength — resting on the formula's population fit, not a biological absolute.
