The shoulder muscles (deltoids) give the upper body its width and are involved in virtually all upper body movements. Strong shoulders improve pressing strength and protect the rotator cuff from injury.
The deltoid has three heads: anterior (front), lateral (side), and posterior (rear). The anterior head assists in pressing and front raises, the lateral head abducts the arm overhead, and the posterior head assists in pulling and rear fly movements.
